Cooling vs. Weighted Migraine Masks: Which Is Better?
Share
Cooling masks and weighted masks both claim comfort benefits, but they work through different mechanisms entirely.
Cooling masks
Usually gel-based, these offer a temperature drop that some people find soothing, especially for tension-related head pain. The cooling effect fades within 20-30 minutes as the gel warms to body temperature.
Weighted masks
These use gentle, even weight (often via small beads) to create a sense of pressure some people associate with calm, similar to a weighted blanket. They don't address light blockage on their own unless combined with a contoured, opaque design.
What matters most for migraine specifically
For light-sensitivity-driven migraines, full light blockage is the priority feature — temperature and weight are secondary comfort preferences that vary person to person.
Bottom line
Neither cooling nor weight beats complete darkness if photophobia is your main trigger. Look for a mask that blocks light fully first, then decide if added cooling or weight fits your preference.
